Introduction

Secoriea Turner was a bright, energetic 8-year-old girl who brought immense joy and love to her family and everyone who knew her. She was born on Thanksgiving Day in 2011, a day filled with gratitude and joy for her parents, Charmaine Turner and Secoriey Williamson. From the moment she was born, Secoriea's vibrant personality began to shine. She loved to dance, make TikTok videos, cheerleading, unicorns, and spend time with her family and friends. Her boundless energy and joyful spirit were contagious, and she had a natural ability to light up any room she entered. "She always has been lighting up the room. She's always loud making everybody laugh," her mother, Charmaine Turner, recalled.

Her Dreams and Aspirations

Even at a young age, Secoriea had big dreams. She was ambitious and intelligent, with a clear vision for her future. She aspired to attend Spelman College in Atlanta. Secoriea's love for learning and her determination were evident in everything she did. Secoriea was known for her bright and inquisitive mind. She was also concerned about social justice issues. "My baby was real smart. She always asked questions and wondered why certain things were done. She knew about George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks," Mom expressed.

A Loving Family

Secoriea was cherished by her family. Her mother, Charmaine, often referred to her as "my princess" and took immense pride in her daughter's kindness and respectfulness. Her father, Secoriey, fondly recalls the joyful moments they shared and the special bond they had. Secoriea was also a beloved sister to her two older brothers, who adored her and miss her deeply.

The Tragic Event

On July 4, 2020, Secoriea's life was tragically cut short in Atlanta near the site of where Rayshard Brooks had been fatally shot by an Atlanta police officer. As her family approached the area, the car was shot into, Secoriea was fatally shot. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Secoriea passed away, leaving a void that can never be filled. "We didn’t deserve this. My baby didn’t deserve this,”" Mom said. The family described their affliction as “still being in a daze — just a really, really bad dream they can’t wake up from.”

As a result from the ordeal, arrests were made for those responsible, however, there have been no convictions. Secoriea Turner's life, though short, was filled with love, laughter, and dreams. Her legacy continues to inspire those who knew her and many others who have been touched by her story. This memorial site is a testament to her spirit, a place where her memory is honored, and her impact is celebrated. As her mother emotionally expressed, Every day is a struggle. It doesn’t get better. We’re hurting. They don’t understand how hard it is to wake up every day without your loved one.”

Scholarship Initiative

While the Secoriea's Social Justice Scholarship is still young, the family would like to give back to a college student that closely mirrors the best qualities displayed by Secoriea. She was a dancer, cheerleader, and a very spirited young child. In her honor, the Secoriea's Social Justice Scholarship engages in providing monetary assistance to a young woman with a boundless spirit who strives to achieve social justice and has a positive impact on their community. The scholarship will be awarded Fall 2024.
